Christian band rocks Wounded Warriors

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- Weapons and Field Training Battalion hosted a dinner and concert for the Wounded Warriors Battalion at Edson Range here the evening of June 26.

The Marines and families of WFTBn., as well as recruits on range and grass week, were also invited to attend the event which was funded by the Armor of Light Baptist Church to show appreciation to the wounded warriors and lift their spirits with music.

“This [event] gives the Wounded Warriors Battalion, families of the command and recruits the opportunity to relax and reflect,” said Col. Christopher Dowling, commanding officer, WFTBn.

Mercy Me, a Christian band, played several songs including one of their most popular songs, I Can Only Imagine, a song that many Marines recognize from attending Christian services in boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., or San Diego. The band volunteered to play for free while on their three-month nationwide tour.

“This was something to acknowledge the Wounded Warriors Battalion’s heart for service and there many sacrifices,” said John Rogers, director of Armor of Light Baptist Church who funds five to six events a month for the military to show their appreciation.

Such an event is meant to spiritually encourage Marines and their families as well as recruits by offering them a break from the rigors of recruit training according to Lt. Cmdr. Sam Contreras, command chaplain of WFTBn.

The wounded warriors that attended had great appreciation for the volunteers giving them the opportunity to get together with peers they can relate to in a positive setting.

“Events like this make you realize you’re not the only Christian in the Marine Corps, and gives us a chance to bond with fellow wounded warriors,” said Cpl. Logan Stovall, WWBn. patient. “This brings up morale and makes you feel good.”
