FARAH PROVINCE, Afghanistan – A village elder was shot by insurgents for cooperating with the Afghan National Police and Coalition Forces in the Nangabad village, Khake-Safed District, June 29.

The village elder had been providing information to the ANP and U.S. Special Operations Forces about improvised explosive device locations and recent insurgent activities in the village.

After the attack, the village elders’ family called the ANP for support. The ANP and U.S. SOF responded to the call and secured the area, preventing further injuries and attacks.

A U.S. SOF team member reported that ANP medics immediately began treatment of the village elder upon arriving at the scene and medically evacuated him to the nearest checkpoint to further assess his wounds.

Once stabilized, the village elder was medically evacuated to an Afghan compound, where a surgical team treated the gunshot wounds.

The village elder is currently staying at the Afghan compound while his wounds heal.
