North Carolina Department of Transportation has coordinated with Naval Facilities Engineering Command aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune to begin work on replacing a drainage pipe outside of the Tarawa Terrace II gate on North Carolina Highway 24 and Western Boulevard. The project is slated to begin June 20.
A 42-inch drainage pipe will replace the old 30-inch pipe to help reduce the flooding due to peak rain.
The NCDOT has agreed to perform work after peak hours to minimize traffic congestion. During all periods of construction, there will be at least one lane of traffic open for both incoming and outgoing vehicles. Lane closure for outbound traffic is scheduled for June 21 and inbound lanes will be closed June 22. During the fifth day, work will be geared toward road repair.
Appropriate warning signs and cones will be placed for diverting traffic at the TT II gate entrance and will be handled by NCDOT. Signage around the Bougainville entrance will be handled by base traffic management.
The Provost Marshal’s Office said the work schedule should not adversely impact emergency vehicle response times and school bus schedules.
Construction is estimated to last five days from start to finish, and the only factor that may cause a delay in construction is inclement weather.
“We’ve had constant improvements with water systems throughout the base,” said Timothy McCurry, Marine Corps liaison with Government and External Affairs, MCB Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River. “We had some flooding problems at the TT2- Western Boulevard intersection, due to the peek rain over the past couple of years. It floods frequently so NCDOT is going to replace a drainage pipe with a larger pipe to alleviate the flooding.”
The NCDOT is absorbing the entire cost of the project, and it’s an opportunity for the base to make an improvement.
