Service members and families viewed and critiqued a variety of art during the 3rd annual Art Show hosted by Tarawa Terrace Community Center, Marine Corps Community Services aboard the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune housing area, June 11.
Masterpieces were submitted by service members, families and patrons, between May 31 and June 7. There were 129 works of art from 50 artists displayed on walls at the event from 5 p.m. to 7p.m.
Drawings, paintings, photographs and crafts were entered by age category. There were multiply categorized for all ages, including a baby’s category for children ages 3 and under. This year an addition category was available for adults ages 18 and older, now everyone was able to submit work regardless of age.
“We really wanted to get the entire community involved,” said Lorraine Fuller, a recreational specialist with TTCC, MCCS. “This was the first year that we opened the event to adults.”
Marine Corps Community Services also judged the art and awarded ribbons to first, second and third place winners within each category and age group. Ribbon winners will also have their work displayed in the front walls of the community center until June 18.
Participants ate snacks and sipped beverages provided by the center as they walked alongside family and friends, pointing at their own pieces and complimenting others.
“I was amazed by art,” said Fuller. “Behind-the-door artists have an outlet to show their talent and it’s really great to see.”
A wide range of original styles and color schemes kept the eyes of many opened and focused between frames. The art provided visual entertainment for many attendees and participating artists seemed very enthused to share their work.
“I love art because you get to express your emotions and feelings in the art,” said Felicity Grenado, a dependent who submitted art for the showcase. “Mandala is one of the favorite types of art. I think everyone should try it. Some kids don’t know how to express themselves with words, so art gives them a chance to do that.”
