KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Soldiers from the 135th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, Alabama National Guard, are expected to return to Birmingham, Oct. 28, after a one-year deployment to Afghanistan.
While in Afghanistan, the unit, led by Brig. Gen. Reynold N. Hoover, has coordinated sustainment operations of U.S., NATO and Afghan forces in the theater of operations.
The 135th ESC serving as the Joint Sustainment Command in Afghanistan, is responsible for managing the flow of equipment, materiel and troops as the number surged to 98,000 Servicemembers during the summer months.
The unit commands 10,000 soldiers, Marines, airmen, sailors and civilian contractors who transformed the way logistical support is delivered to all U.S. service members in Afghanistan.
The 135th ESC is concluding a deployment that began last November at Fort Hood when a member of the unit was injured during the Fort Hood shootings.
