CONTINGENCY OPERATING BASE ADDER, Iraq – The 396th Transportation Company plans to train and license heavy wheel vehicle operators on how to drive the M915 class line-haul truck June 8 after receiving additional trucks and trailers.
The 396th Transportation Company, 110th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 224th Special Troops Battalion, 224th Sustainment Brigade, 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), has already trained and licensed 25 Soldiers to operate the M915.
“For the most part, the M915 training consists of basic operation of the vehicle, such as maneuvering a right and left-hand turn, sight-side and straight line backing, maneuvering around curves, and proper Preventative Maintenance Checks and Services procedures,” said Sgt. Nicholas Popple, training section non-commissioned officer-in-charge, 396th TC, 110th CSSB, 224th STB, 224th SB, 13th ESC, and a native of Funk, Neb.
The 396th TC has received ten M915 class line-haul trucks and nine M872 semitrailers in order to run more and longer haul missions. The Soldiers will have the opportunity to test their driving skills as early as next week when the company runs its first M915 mission.
“The trucks are in good condition, and the company has plenty of capable non-commissioned officers ready to train junior enlisted Soldiers to be proficient operators of the M915,” said 1st Lt. Christopher Brunner, second platoon leader, 396th TC, 110th CSSB, 224th STB, 224th SB, 13th ESC, and a native of Charleston, S.C.
The company can now employ an additional platform alongside the PLS and Heavy Equipment Transporter.
“The M915 is one of my favorite military vehicles. I’ll be glad when we finally get a chance to take them on the road,” said Spc. Michael Portofee, heavy wheeled vehicle operator, 396th TC, 110th CSSB, 224th STB, 224th SB, 13th ESC, and a native of Westerly, R.I.
When operating with an M872 semitrailer, the M915 is capable of hauling over 100,000 pounds. In addition to enhanced armor, the M915 features a larger cab to store combat gear, personal weapons and ammunition.
