MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- A range of guests, that included the sergeant major of the Marine Corps, Sgt. Maj. Carlton Kent, gathered for a retirement ceremony held to recognize the achievements of retired Sgt. Maj. Ronald Himsworth, former sergeant major, II Marine Expeditionary Force, while acknowledging the incoming sergeant major, Sgt. Maj. Carl Green, at the II MEF headquarters building, here, July 10.
Working with Lt. Gen. Dennis J. Hejlik, commanding general, II MEF, as his senior enlisted advisor, Hejlik and Himsworth built a strong bond working together.
"When you look at it in total, he is what we should all aspire to be. Himsworth is a Marine 365 days a year. I will personally miss you. I will miss you as a friend," said Hejlik.
Achieving the highest enlisted rank is not earned easily, or by chance. During his career, Himsworth earned five meritorious promotions and has fought in many conflicts, including Operation Iraqi Freedom and Desert Storm. His experiences and success in the Corps ultimately lead to his rank of sergeant major after only 19 yearss.
Humble with his achievements, Himsworth explained getting were he was in the wouldn't have been possible with out his family and friends.
"Marines, Sailors, family and friends, I want to thank you for coming here. I want to thank the Marine Corps. I've hung around the Marine Corps for some 30 years. When you come to the United States Marine Corps, you meet a lot of great people," Himsworth said.
As the senior enlisted adviser to II MEF's commanding general, Himsworth's role was vital in providing additional insight of Marine activity for Hejlik, who commands the largest group of Marines on the East Coast. As Himsworth retires, he passes the responsibility to Green.
Taking the microphone to speak a few words, Green took a moment to thank Himsworth.
"Sergeant Major Himsworth, thank you for everything, I've known you for a while. I learned a lot from you. I still do. You are my friend and mentor. You will be missed. Semper Fidelis, oorah," Green said.
Green then turned to face the Marines of II MEF saying, "Marines and Sailors of II MEF, I am honored. I work for you. I am your eyes and ears."
