VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Students and teachers from Pembroke Elementary School welcomed Sailors and Marines from Commander, Amphibious Squadron 8 to celebrate the beginning of an educational partnership, March 12.
Working together PHIBRON 8 and the school started several programs that allow Sailors to come in and help the children with reading, basic computer skills and starting a garden project for their green theme program.
"This is my first time helping out with this particular school," said Lt. j. g. David Ngbea. "Volunteering makes me feel good, especially when we are helping out the children because they are our future."
Petty Officer 2nd Class Jen Robinson, who participated in the program by helping the students with basic computer skills said she enjoyed teaching students even if it is just the basics of what she does on a daily basis.
"By volunteering, this is a way to get children excited about their lessons in school, as well as show the side of the military most children do not know about," said Robinson.
During the visit PHIBRON 8 and Pembroke ES exchanged plaques and other gifts to show appreciation for their new partnership.
Deputy Commander, PHIBRON 8 Capt. John Bruening said that he was excited about this new partnership and looks forward to future projects together with the school.
"Coming to the school to volunteer afforded our command the opportunity to give back to not only the community but to guide and teach our leaders of tomorrow," said Bruening.
The school's reading resource teacher, Karen Dragon, said she could not have been happier with the services the Sailors are providing.
"The military provides the one on one with the students which is something the teachers can not always do, and volunteering shows the military is willing to come out and provide a service to their community," said Dragon. "Things like this are priceless. I know when the children see the uniforms they get curious and excited. So the volunteers today are sharing a positive influence on the children and I thank them for their support."
