Service Members use Boxing as a Positive way to Expel Energy

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Fifty amateur boxers put on their gloves and stepped into the ring at the Rockwell Hall Gymnasium on Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek to compete in an intramural boxing competition, March 4.

"This sport event enables the Sailors to take advantage and put their time and energy into something positive," said Kelvin Anthony, a boxing fan and spectator.

For many of the competitors, this was their first time competing.

"I have been training since Dec. 1, 2008, and this was my first match," said Airman Chris Wright. "This event afforded me the opportunity to do something that I enjoy and keep me focused while showing good camaraderie with my fellow shipmates."

Other Sailors competing in the event had a few more years of boxing experience under their belt.

"I have been training for 10 years," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Rashid Graham. "This was my first match on a military facility, and I had fun putting on a good show for the crowd."

Morale, Welfare and Recreation, along with Rockwell Hall Gymnasium, plans to host another boxing event next year and invites service members to not only attend, but also to get fit and take advantage of the opportunity to step into the ring.

"To the Sailors who are thinking about this event for next year, boxing can be fun and it is hard work," said Graham. "Two minutes may not seem long, but once you step into that ring with your opponent and expel a lot of energy you will see how much your training paid off. Win or lose you will feel a sense of accomplishment."
