HAMPTON, Va. – Military and community members, as well as corporate and private sponsors, attended the United Service Organizations' Anniversary Gala at Hampton Convention Center, Feb. 21, celebrating 25 years of service to the military.
The USO is a private, nonprofit organization that provides morale and recreational services to members of the U.S. military worldwide. It also offers assistance and outreach through information and referral, quality of life programs and family outreach.
"The USO of Hampton Roads' Gala is one of our most important events to raise funds to support over 100 programs and services we offer at no-cost to the military community in southeast Virginia," said Jon Thompson, USOHR president and chief executive officer. "We are excited to kick off 25 great years of service at this event. We hope to strengthen our commitment to the military community we service while recognizing those corporate and private sponsors that support us in our mission."
Northrop Grumman was the title sponsor for the USOHR Gala and representatives from the company expressed their love of supporting the Armed Forces.
Mike Petters, president, Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding, said he hoped the supporters leave the gala realizing the critical role they play in the USO and in the lives of our men and women in uniform.
"Even in these turbulent economic times, we must remember that our family members, friends, neighbors, and co-workers are serving in uniform all over the world," said Petters. "Many are still in harm's way and they all deserve our support."
During the gala there were three silent auctions and a raffle for a Harley Davidson Motorcycle.
"Our gala is held annually to support the military members who are serving all over the world," said Liane Bloeser. "The silent auctions are fun for our supporters; they love going around to see the different things in each themed room."
Bloeser also said that the gala is a successful fundraiser every year and the volunteers love being apart of supporting the troops.
"This was my first time volunteering, and I feel it is very rewarding and that this is for a great cause," said Gladys Wagner, an USOHR volunteer. "The military does a lot for our country, and it's an honor to give back by volunteering."
