FORT HOOD, Texas – For the past few months, many traffic signs indicating school zones, have been inactive, but as the new school year approaches, so does the return of those familiar flashing amber lights.
The Army Combat Readiness and Safety Center has made safety tips available for parents and drivers and has provided reminders for children. Texas state law states no phone use – even hands free – is allowed in a school zone.
Drivers should be aware and alert when entering and exiting driveways and school parking lots and when crossing into intersections. The Army Safety Center also advises drivers to reduce distractions including texting or talking on the phone. Parents should encourage teenage drivers to understand and abide by all traffic laws.
Army safety recommends that children avoid crossing streets alone until they reach 10 years old. They should always cross streets using crosswalks, walk in front of buses to remain in view of the driver, and avoid running out into parking lots.
Dr. Jennifer Warren, principal for Oveta Culp Hobby Elementary School here said safety is a priority for the school.
“A key to safety is ensuring parents provide three things for their children – walk them to school if they are under 10 years of age, keep your emergency contacts updated, and keep traffic moving in the parking lots,” she added.
Additional safety measures to ensure a successful school year include obeying crossing guards and properly instructing children on whether they can expect to walk home or be picked up at day’s end, Warren said.
