Legal update class offered on base

MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. - Marine Corps Base Quantico’s Legal Support Section will host a legal refresher course April 17, 2014, at the Chapel Annex, 3019 Embry Loop, aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico.

This all-day class with legal representatives from the trial, defense and legal assistance sections, provides commands with information on law changes and the understanding of base legal services.

Marine representatives from bases and detachments from all over the National Capital Region are expected to attend the all-day event, but Combe explained who may best suited for the experience.

“It’s open to anyone,” said Combe. “Company level commanders, senior leaders and legal officers and clerks [may be benefited the most.]”

“We provide commanders with information and support to assist in providing good order and discipline within their units,” said Gunnery Sgt. Terrance Leggett, defense services organization legal chief. “[This course] gives the command a better view [of the legal process].”

Capt. Peter Combe, deputy officer-in-charge of the LSSS- National Capital Region, gave two reasons for the course.

“No. 1 [is] to understand different roles such as the post-trial process if there is an appeal, and the division of labor and roles [within the legal services],” he said. “No. 2 [is] understanding the appropriate command actions and what your responsibilities are in dealing with folks [who have legal issues].”

The Victims Legal Counsel Organization, a fairly new section only in operation since late last year, will be present to explain how they provide legal representation during a trial while ensuring that the victim’s rights are being honored and represented, and to assist in navigating the process.
