LEAVENWORTH, Kan. - In recognition of his service and remarks at the Mission Training Complex, Fort Leavenworth dining out, retired Brig. Gen. Stan Cherrie, was given a glass certificate of appreciation by Lt. Col. Kelly C. Brown, MTC commander, Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Leavenworth, Kan.
Cherrie discussed a variety of topics, ranging from the importance of a drug-free military, to how to maintain the standard that has resulted in the respect the military receives from society. He also spoke about his wife Mary and their relationship throughout his career.
“It was great to hear him talk about how his wife supported him through thick and thin,” said 1st Sgt. Jeffrey Burton, who was in attendance with his wife of ten years, Stacie.
Cherrie began his military career after graduating from Rutgers University with a degree in psychology and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Armor Corps in 1964. While serving during one of his two tours in Vietnam, he lost his right foot, a portion of his left heel and two fingers from his right hand.
“He went to the end and still kept going,” said Sgt. Joshua M. Thompson. “I think after him being wounded and then having the chance to get out of the military and choosing to stay to continue his career says a lot about his character,” said Thompson.
In addition to serving in Vietnam, Cherrie served in Germany and Bosnia and during Operation Desert Storm; he served as the operations officer of VII Corps. He retired from the Army in 1993 and now serves as an Army Leadership Coach.
His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, the Legion of Merit, the Air Medal with valor, Air Medal Numeral 8.
He resides in Leavenworth with his wife Mary. They have been married for 49 years. They have three children and two grandchildren.
