PHOENIX - The adjutant general of the Arizona National Guard was promoted to major general March 20 at Papago Park Military Reservation.
Air Force Maj. Gen. Michael T. McGuire pinned on his second star with help from Gov. Janice K. Brewer, his daughter Maggie and his wife Deborah in the main hall of the Allen Readiness Center here.
McGuire was also awarded the Legion of Merit for his accomplishments during his time as the commander of the Arizona Air National Guard’s 162nd Fighter Wing in Tucson.
Brewer noted in her remarks shortly before the pinning that McGuire’s proven leadership has been evident throughout his career.
“He has already proven himself as an enormously capable officer and administrator, working to improve the efficiency and reputation of the Arizona National Guard,” Brewer said.
Brewer went on to mention the future of the Arizona Guard with McGuire at the helm.
“He has the full faith of the state of Arizona behind him and I know the Guard will continue to improve and make us proud under his strong leadership,” Brewer said.
McGuire noted that ultimately members of the Department of Emergency and Military Affairs are civil servants.
“We are in the best and greatest Guard organization in the country and all of us are servants first and we have to be selfless in our service,” McGuire said.
