BREMERTON, Wash. – With a screwdriver in one hand and a drill in the other, a sailor assigned to the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) leads the volunteer effort inside the Hospice of Kitsap County Thrift Shop.

Ship’s Serviceman 1st Class Rick McCaig, from Devol, Okla. did not expect praise for his deeds; he volunteered because he knew it would help the community.

“I think it’s important to give back to our community” said McCaig. “They support us and show their appreciation for what we do. Getting involved shows we appreciate them as well.”

McCaig is a regular participant of both community and command-sponsored volunteer events throughout Kitsap County and his efforts have not gone unnoticed.

“[McCaig] definitely stepped up as a leader of the volunteer crews,” said Gigi McKay, the Hospice of Kitsap County Thrift Shop store manager.

McKay, hosting a volunteer event for the first time, admitted she was a little unorganized and said McCaig helped organize the work and kept the large turnout engaged.

McCaig learned his craftsman skills and the value of service to others from his parents, both of whom worked in construction.

“It’s just something I’ve always enjoyed,” said McCaig. “I spend a lot of time at work, so when I get a chance to put my skills to use for others it is fun for me.”

“I can’t say enough about him [McCaig], he is such an amazing young man,” said McKay. “He’s exemplary in his attitude, in his respect, his work ethic and the work product that he puts out. I couldn’t ask for a better helper.”

The thrift shop was established to give local families a way to support those served by The Hospice of Kitsap County by donating goods and clothing.
