CAMP PHOENIX, Afghanistan - Georgia Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss toured Camp Phoenix to meet with Georgia Guardsmen as the unit assumes it's mission from the Alabama 226th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade. The 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team provided insight into the current missions overseas and demonstrated why the Macon Volunteers are second to none.
“You're 48th Brigade from Georgia I would say, and I know I am probably biased as the commander, but the best combat brigade team in the Army National Guard,” said Col. Randall V. Simmons, Jr., the Task Force Volunteer commander. “When it comes to metrics we are untouchable. There is not another brigade that can touch us in personnel readiness, strength, retention, medical readiness. Equipment wise we are on par with our active duty counterparts, and not only do we have the equipment but we can use it and bring it to bear operationally.”
Brigade staff guided the senator through the maze-like corridors of the camp to explain their capabilities and meet with fellow Georgians. Even some of Alabama's Guardsmen hailed from Georgia who shook hands and requested an autograph for a photo. A longstanding advocate for the military and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Chambliss met with military leaders during his visit as part of congressional duties, but sought out service members to show support.
“The other reason we are here is to look you in the eye with your boots on the ground, appreciate what a great job you are doing, how much we know you have sacrificed and your families have sacrificed, to protect America and protect Americans,” said Chambliss to a formation of 48th soldiers in front of the Camp Phoenix garrison command office. “I am very proud of every one of you for your commitment to freedom.”
