FORT HOOD, Texas - Fort Hood officials have released the name of a soldier who died Jan. 6 from a apparent gunshot wound in his off post residence in Killeen, Texas.
Sgt. 1st Class Robert Floyd Vedder Jr., 38, whose home of record is listed as Schenectady, N.Y., entered active duty service in September 1993 as a signal support systems specialist. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, since December 2011.
Vedder deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from March 2003 to March 2004, December 2005 to November 2006 and November 2007 to February 2009.
Vedder's awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, five Army Commendation Medals, nine Army Achievement Medals, six Army Good Conduct Medals, two National Defense Service Medals, Iraqi Campaign Medal with campaign stars, Korean Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, three Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbons, Army Service Ribbon, five Overseas Service Ribbons, and NATO Medal.
