PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard medevaced an 87-year-old woman Monday from a cruise ship approximately 38 miles east of Ocracoke, N.C.

Personnel aboard the 1,068-foot cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway notified watchstanders at the Fifth District Command Center at approximately 11:30 a.m., stating the woman was is medical distress.

Coast Guard watchstanders launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and a flight surgeon from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C.

The Coast Guard hoisted the woman and transferred her care to awaiting medical personnel at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, N.C.

The woman was in stable condition.
