Kids turn up the heat on fire prevention

YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea - The USAG Yongsan Fire Department and Emergency Services, with the help of Seoul City Fire Services, gave students from Seoul American Elementary School fire prevention tips to help raise their emergency readiness during Fire Prevention Week here, Oct. 9.

The tour began with Pak Chang Pom, a USAG Yongsan fire inspector, giving the students safety tips on how to inspect a home fire alarm and how they should respond when it alerts them of a potential fire.

"Our goal is to make sure these kids know and understand different fire prevention tips and techniques," Pak said. "Safety first is our priority when it comes to fire prevention."

During the tour, the kids participated in a fire extinguisher demonstration and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training. They also experienced a simulated earthquake drill.

"We wanted to make sure the kids were familiar with the proper use of a fire extinguisher and how to do CPR on everyone," said Ms. Kim, a Seoul Fire Services Medic. "It is very important that everyone in the household has knowledge of these possible life saving tools."

The event ended with a "Burger Burn" cookout sponsored by USO, giving firefighters and the Seoul Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, who assisted in fire prevention week, the opportunity to enjoy a meal together.

"I would like to thank everyone for their support and for coming out to make this (fire prevention) week a good and educational one," Pak said.

Fire Prevention Week is an annual event for the USAG Yongsan and entire Area II community.
