Devilpups protect dog house, beat Trojans 33-8

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - A second quarter surge by the Lejeune Devilpups led them to victory against the South Halifax Trojans aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Nov. 30.

The Devilpups eliminated the Trojans, winning 33-8 in the third round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association playoffs.

The Devilpups started the game slow, but made up for it in the second quarter, scoring 20 points.

The first touchdown of the game was scored in the second quarter by Jamaz Richardson, Lejeune Devilpups’ starting running back, who ended the game with 146 rushing yards.

The Trojans also scored before the half ended, but another touchdown by Richardson and last minute 12-yard touchdown catch by wide receiver Brady Bodine set the home team up for another win.

“Winning this game leaves us one more step closer to the state championship,” said Darryl Schwartz, Lejeune Devilpups’ head coach.

The Devilpups started the second half strong with another touchdown by Bodine. A strong defense protected their dog house, forcing four interceptions during the game.

“You have to be confident when playing defense,” said Cameron Mallard, starting corner for the Devilpups, who also intercepted three Trojan passes. “We’ve worked hard for what we have and we want to keep it. Next game is just another game we need to win to get to the championship.”

The Devilpups finished strong at home and will travel to Plymouth High School to play the Vikings at 7:30 p.m., Friday, in hopes to advance to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state championship game.
