DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. - Fifteen airmen sat with veterans for a luncheon hosted by Atria Bell Court Gardens Retirement Community in Tucson, Ariz., Nov. 13.
Joan Smith, the community's engaged life director, connected with D-M to make the event happen.
"I contacted [355th Public Affairs office] about getting volunteers from the base," Smith said. "When she told me how many were coming, I was surprised. Events like this honor the veterans' service, and the airmens' attendance added a special element to the event."
The luncheon started with the D-M Honor Guard presenting the colors while the attendees sang the national anthem. Afterward, the veterans and airmen honored all of the military branches by singing each service's song followed by a barbecue where Airmen had the chance to talk with the veterans.
"I think this was great," said Chief Master Sgt. Michael Wall, retired operational readiness inspector. "I learned a lot myself. The airmen took time to cooperate and understand the older generations."
Airmen were proud and honored to have the opportunity to spend time with the individuals that paved the way for them.
"This is a good way to give back to them," said Senior Airman Chad Cahill, 355th Civil Engineering Squadron structural journeyman. "This gives them company that they wouldn't normally have unless they have family close by."
