Marines present Phoenix student-athlete, Arizona State commit as Semper Fidelis All-American

GLENDALE, Ariz. - U.S. Marine Corps Captains Matthew Browning and Jeffrey Arroyo, of Marine Corps Recruiting Station Phoenix, presented a Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl jersey to Tyler Whiley, wide receiver for Chaparral High School of Scottsdale, Ariz., during halftime of the sold out Houston Texans versus the Arizona Cardinals football game at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., Nov. 10, 2013.

Whiley, a 17-year-old senior, was selected as a Semper Fi All-American for his dedication in the classroom, the community and on the gridiron.

“I’ve always wanted to be an all-American and especially to be able to play for the Marines, it’s a great honor,” said Whiley, an Arizona State University commit.

Whiley, 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, has 14 touchdowns and more than 1,200 yards receiving for the 10-1 Chaparral Firebirds. His team will have a chance to avenge their only loss on the season in a rematch against Marcos de Niza High School of Tempe, Ariz., during their second round state-playoff matchup Nov. 15, 2013.

The Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl will be played at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., Jan. 5, 2014, and will air live on Fox Sports 1 at 9 p.m. EST/6p.m. PST.
