SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. – This headquarters, formerly known as Third Army/ARCENT announces the name reverts to U.S. Army Central, effective immediately. This name emphasizes the headquarters mission and coincides with General Order No. 24 dated October 2006 designating the headquarters as USARCENT.

The name U. S. Army Central includes each of our subordinate units under one unified headquarters. The transition to the name also more accurately reflects our evolution as an Army Service Component Command and experts in the Middle East and Central Asia.

Although the name of the headquarters has reverted, the commitment to honor its lineage has not. The accomplishments and achievements of Third Army are significant and remain U.S. Army Central’s history. General Order No. 24 states, “USARCENT perpetuates the lineage and honors of the Third Army and is authorized the display and wear of appropriate Third Army heraldic items as specified by the Institute of Heraldry and the Center of Military history.”
