SOTO CANO AIR BASE, Honduras -- Pink was the color of the day here today as members of Joint Task Force-Bravo participated in the first-ever Soto Cano Air Base "Fight Against Breast Cancer 6K" to increase breast cancer awareness as well as to raise funds for breast cancer research through the Combined Federal Campaign.
The race was planned by the 612th Air Base Wing here. Members of the 612th's Logistics Supply Flight coordinated with JTF-Bravo leadership, American Forces Network, the base Morale, Welfare and Recreation office, Joint Security Forces and the JTF-Bravo Medical Element in order to ensure the event was a success.
"The 612th Air Base Wing wanted to advocate the importance of breast cancer awareness," said Maj. Scott Denny, 612th ABS director of operations. "We wanted to let people know it's important to know the risk, to get screened, to know what is normal for you and to make healthy lifestyle choices."
Members of Joint Task Force-Bravo showed up dressed in pink, ready to run the six-kilometer course while showing their support of the fight against breast cancer. Throughout the morning, runners crossed the finish line in all types of pink outfits, from wigs to tutus.
"Seeing all the participants running the race and dressed in pink proves Joint Task Force-Bravo is truly a 'team of teams' in the fight against breast cancer," said Denny.
In the weeks leading up to the event, the squadron raised more than $1,000 through the sale of breast cancer awareness socks, bracelets, and individual donations.
"I wasn't surprised by that, because we are all in some way affected or at risk for this disease, directly or indirectly," said Denny. "It further proves that Joint Task Force-Bravo is a family that truly cares for others."
All proceeds were donated to support breast cancer awareness and research through the Combined Federal Campaign.
