Cordell Hull employees receive Nashville District’s Hedgehog Award

CARTHAGE, Tenn. - Employees at Cordell Hull Lake received the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s Hedgehog Award Oct. 22 at the visitor’s center for their efforts to restore customer services earlier this year following a power outage.

The district recognized the team’s efforts when a 4,160-volt feeder cable that provided station power from Cordell Power Plant to the Resource Manager’s Office failed April 18, 2013, resulting in a long-term loss of power to the resource manager’s office, visitor’s center and shop facilities.

Tim Dunn, operations manager for the Mid-Cumberland Area Office, said the entire Cordell Hull project staff pulled together to continue operating and meet the needs of the public.

He said the staff initially relocated to the Cordell Hull Power Plant and continued to work in a cramped space.

Once temporary power could be established to the facilities, the staff returned with modifications to work schedules. Employees also transported fuel almost daily to keep the generator running.

“While waiting for the new feeder cable to be delivered by the manufacturer, the power plant staff did an outstanding job of proactively preparing all the pull boxes and terminals to be able to quickly pull the one-mile long cables into place and to restore power as quickly as possible once the new cables were delivered,” Dunn said.

Lt. Col. John L. Hudson, Nashville District commander, personally recognized the entire team at Cordell Hull Lake and praised their “can-do” spirit.

“They worked together and focused on doing everything possible to make repairs and to provide the very best customer service under the circumstances,” Hudson said. “This team did an outstanding job, and I’m pleased to recognize them.”

Dunn added that throughout the two-month process the entire team safely worked toward a common goal, while keeping the internal and external customers at the forefront.

The Cordell Hull Project staff recognized includes Andy Brimm, Linda Lee, Kevin Claywell, Jimmy Johnson, Grant Bingham, Wesley Butler, Vince Harriman, Leslie Mayhan, Timothy Loftis, Kevin Halliburton, Mark Herd, Marci Hagerich, Dustin Boles, Kenny Claywell, Stephen Gregory, Philip Sliger, Josh Buck, Bert Merritt, Chris Vega, Ron Devlin, Dale Raines, Lesslie Williams and John Ermer.

The Hedgehog Award is given quarterly by the Nashville District to individuals or a team of employees to recognize excellence.
