FORWARD OPERATING BASE FARAH, Afghanistan - Soldiers, sailors, civilians and coalition partners participated in the annual U.S. Army 10-Miler conducted at Forward Operating Base Farah, western Afghanistan, today.
Members from Provincial Reconstruction Team Farah, Nemesis Troop 4-2 Cavalry Scouts, Task Force 45 and other Army and Navy personnel assigned to the FOB were early to rise as more than 50 runners squared off for the endurance run.
Started in 1985, the yearly run moderated by the U.S. Army Military District of Washington, in tandem with this year’s additional financial sponsorship from Navy Federal Credit Union, provided runner numbers, T-shirts and plaque awards for males and females in first, second and third place categories.
“It was a great opportunity to come together as a base to participate in a healthy competitive event,” said PRT Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Jeremy Fogt.
The event took place on a measured course throughout FOB Farah that was dotted by volunteers who cheered and provided water and shade for the participants. Runners began the run at 6 a.m. local Farah time and were given four hours to complete the course. Participants could run, walk or a combination of both to complete the 10 miles within the allotted time.
First place winner in the male category was Staff Sgt. Michael Kowaleski from Forward Surgical Team 758, and the first place winner from the female category was Sgt. Tiffany Jefferson from 198th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, Bravo Company.
PRT Farah’s mission is to train, advise, and assist Afghan government leaders at the municipal, district, and provincial levels in Farah province, Afghanistan.
