FORT STEWART, Ga. - The 1st Squadron, 108th Cavalry Regiment, of the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Georgia Army National Guard is the eyes and ears of the brigade, providing reconnaissance and surveillance throughout any area of operations.
The cavalry unit, headquartered in Calhoun, Ga. is a reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition support unit trained to foresee, stall and restrain any possible threats to mission accomplishment, by heavy fire support and maneuvers. Its campaign participation includes two major wars, World War II and the War on Terrorism in, both, Iraq (2005 – 2007) and Afghanistan (2009 – 2010).
The battalion, led by Lt. Col. Christopher Kemper and Command Sgt. Maj. Ronnie Perryman, is currently participating in eXportable Combat Training Capability (XCTC) at the Georgia Garrison Training Center, Fort Stewart, Ga. XCTC is a three-week battalion exercise that the Georgia National Guard 48th IBCT hosts to provide Soldiers with an experience similar to combat missions overseas and is a battalion field-training instrument designed to certify company proficiency in coordination with First Army.
More than 2,000 Georgia Guardsmen have converged on the regional training center at Fort Stewart, minimizing cost and time otherwise spent traveling to one of the Army’s Combat Training Centers in Fort Irwin, Calif. or Fort Polk, La.
