FORWARD OPERATING BASE NARAY, Afghanistan -- Soldiers from Task Force Saber saved the life of a one-year-old Afghan girl at Forward Operating Base Naray July 17.
The child arrived at the base not eating or drinking and suffering from respiratory distress and seizures, according to Army Dr. (Capt.) Scott Harrington, doctor of orthopedics, Headquarter and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment.
Doctors, nurses and medics from both the 160th Forward Surgical Team and the 1-91 CAV. treated Salima.
Salima was treated for pneumonia and given life-saving antibiotics, oxygen and fluids, according to Harrington.
After initial treatment at Forward Operating Base Naray, Salima was evacuated by helicopter to medical facilities at Bagram Airfield and treated in their intensive care unit.
"She was deathly-ill and about to die," said Harrington in a prepared release. "If the child was not given intensive care she would have died. She was saved by (this) highly trained team."
Harrington also praised the efforts of the pilots and medics involved in transporting Salima to Bagram Airfield.
"The 160th FST and the 1-91 CAV aid station are here to help care for U.S. Soldiers and to help care for medical emergencies in the local population in coordination with local Afghan medical providers," said Harrington.
