EASTOVER, S.C.— Command Sgt. Maj. Furman Hood, former command sergeant major of the 59th Troop Command, S.C. Army National Guard, turned over responsibility of the unit to Command Sgt. Maj. Chet Welch during a change of responsibility ceremony Sept. 7, 2013, at McCrady Training Center in Eastover, S.C.
The role of the noncommissioned officer dates back to the Roman Legions. Over time, the role of NCOs has changed, but the two primary responsibilities remain the same; accomplishment of the mission and the maintaining the welfare of soldiers.
“We have soldiers in country, across the U.S. and here in South Carolina and we need to take care of all of them,” said Brig. Gen. Roy Van McCarty, commander of the 59th Troop Cmd. “Care and concern for the soldier, that’s the heart of him (Hood). He left tremendous shoes to fill.”
Hood served in many units during his 43 years in the S.C. National Guard. His priority was always trying to do more for the soldiers who worked with him.
“It’s hard to go,” said Hood. “I know you (Welch) look after soldiers. Good luck to you.”
Welch has served in the S.C. National Guard for 33 years building his knowledge of a variety of units.
“I appreciate the selection and trust from the command,” said Welch. “Command Sgt. Maj. Hood, thank you for the mentorship. I appreciate the help, assistance, and guidance you’ve given me.”
