CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan - Task Force Pyramid soldiers celebrated Women’s Equality Day, marking the 93rd anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote, Aug. 24.
Sgt. 1st Class Christine Dezonie, Equal Opportunity Advisor, organized the 87th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion’s first combat Women’s Equality Day observation.
The celebration began with the presentation of colors by an all-female color guard.
The Women’s Equality Day event brought the ‘Pyramid Warriors’ back in time as they explored the history of the Women Suffrage Movement through a skit highlighting notable key suffragettes such as: Abigail Adams, Carrie Chapman Catt, Sojourner Truth and Susan B. Anthony.
The program went on to feature female soldiers of different eras. Three 87th soldiers highlighted military women in history and their involvement in multiple conflicts, from the conflict in the Persian Gulf to Operation Enduring Freedom.
“Making up over 15 percent of our battalion formation, our mission success hinges on the sacrifices of the women amongst our ranks,” said Lt. Col. Lance Curtis, the 87th CSSB battalion commander.
Master Chief Petty Officer Kelly McNulty, II Marine Expeditionary Force, was the guest speaker for the event.
McNulty likened the Women Suffrage Movement to the current state of women in Afghanistan.
In January 2004, Afghan women were given equal rights by the new constitution. McNulty noted the direct correlation to our presence and its effect on the progress in the fight for women’s equality throughout the world.
“We sent female soldiers, sailors, and Marines out to the communities to bring awareness to how women of the U.S. are treated and respected. Some were inspired and took action,” said McNulty. “Women across the world have fought for equal rights and equal treatment. You impact their ideas, their ideals and how they see people of other countries.”
“Celebrating the event while deployed helps build camaraderie and cultural awareness. The event was for the Soldiers,” said Dezonie.
“It is because of the men and women of 87th CSSB, and countless others taking a stand against the wrong doings against women in this country (Afghanistan) with courage and determination to change the future so it will be a better place for the next generation.”, added McNulty.
