WASHINGTON - A native of Wray, Colo. was recognized during a Redskins football game at FedExField in Landover, Md., Aug. 19.
Cpl. Nicholas Williams, 26, enlisted in the Corps December 2009, and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. He arrived at the Barracks Aug. 2010 and currently serves as a platoon sergeant and sergeant of the guard for Marine Security Company.
“I’m a huge NFL fan, so being there on the sidelines was a fantastic experience,” said Williams. “The fact that the Redskins organization and the USAA were recognizing me and another Marine for our service was such a great honor.”
While stationed at the Barracks, Williams conducts security operations while supervising and providing for the welfare of his platoon.
Williams graduates college in January and plans on submitting a package to attend Officer Candidate School to earn a commission as an officer.
His awards include a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, and a Presidential Service Badge.
Barracks Marines support ceremonial and security missions in the national capital region. Each year, the Marines support more than 30 parades and hundreds of ceremonies and functions to include funerals and sporting events across the country and globe while maintaining proficiency in their respective military occupations and meeting their annual Marine Corps training requirements.
