Hometown News Release: 1st Lt. Hethcox

FORWARD OPERATING BASE SPIN BOLDAK, Afghanistan – U.S. Army 1st Lt. Ansil R. Hethcox, a field artillery officer with 1st Battalion, 6th Field Artillery Regiment, is currently serving with Combined Task Force 1-6 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom at Forward Operating Base Spin Boldak.

Hethcox, a native of Goldvein, Va., and graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, arrived in theater in July 2013. He has served in the military for four years and this is his second deployment to Afghanistan.

Hethcox serves as the night battle captain for the battalion. The battle captain is responsible for monitoring operations in the battalion’s area of responsibility.

Joining the military has always been one of his goals.

“My dad was in the Army and growing up it was what I wanted to do. So, I was just following his lead,” Hethcox said. “It’s one of those things that - when you look back - if you hadn’t have done it, it’s something that I would have wanted to do. So, I went for it.”

His biggest personal goal is to strengthen his relationship with his wife, Danielle Burrington Hethcox.

“This deployment I am trying to build up my marriage, instead of focusing on the negative things of being deployed,” Hethcox said. “My wife is a very positive person. She always says, ‘being happy is a decision you make.’ I am working to improve our marriage by trying to maintain a positive perspective throughout the deployment.“

Hethcox’s deployment will last from nine to 12 months. Once complete, he will return to his wife at Fort Knox.
