ALBANY, Ga. - Sgt. Ronny Adams, noncommissioned officer-in-charge of the Warrior Express Service Team, Combat Logistics Regiment-2, returned home Friday after a six-month deployment to Afghanistan.
He was greeted by several Marines upon arriving at the Southwest Georgia Regional Airport in Albany, Ga.
As a Marine Corps Community Service Marine, Adams’ responsibility was to buy items from the exchange at Camp Dwyer and take them to the Marines forward deployed using a Logistics Vehicle System Replacement vehicle.
“My job was to bring the basic necessities to the Marines at the smaller forward-observation bases, which included everything from socks to personal hygiene items to energy drinks,” Adams, a native of Silver City, N.M., said. “The items increased the Marines’ quality of life and helped keep their minds better focused on the mission at hand.
“Some of the Marines only saw us once a month,” he added. “So when we pulled up, there were smiles on everyone’s faces.”
During his deployment, Adams served four months at Camp Dwyer and two months at Camp Leatherneck, both in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
Adams, 26, estimated he served 600-700 customers a month.
In addition to his duties as the NCOIC, Adams also oversaw the postal and disbursing operations while traveling to and from the FOBs.
Marines in the field were able to withdraw cash from a disbursing clerk to make purchases and mail items home, he said.
“We traveled in a 3-5 man team and when we were on the road, we would be away from the main camp from three days to up to a week, depending on the location of the forward observation post,” he said.
Adams described his deployment as fast paced, which he liked because it made the deployment go by faster.
His arrival back in Albany marked the end of his second deployment to Afghanistan. In 2010, he deployed for six months to the same location performing the same duties.
“It is a great day when a Marine comes back from a combat deployment,” Chief Warrant Officer 2 Montreal J. Newkirk, MCCS Officer, Marine Corps Community Services, MCLB Albany, said. “Sergeant Adams did an outstanding job on the deployment to Afghanistan and received a Certificate of Commendation. We as, MCCS Marines, continue to serve in any clime or place, with the goods and services that help provide others with a little piece of home.”
