EL PASO, Texas – Soldiers of Fort Bliss and the surrounding community are never at a loss for something to do off the clock. For those who relish the idea of combining both physical endurance and a need for speed, bicycle motocross offers thrill seekers just that opportunity.
BMX racers ride specially designed bicycles on dirt tracks built of sharp banks and steep hills used for jumping. Anyone looking for a new way to get or stay in shape is sure to find it on the track.
"It will definitely work your body out," said retired Sgt. 1st Class Robert Crumpler, a BMX racer and Inglewood, Calif., native. "You may think you're a physically fit stud or that you have a high (Army Physical Fitness Test) score, but if you come out here, you will find it challenging."
A lot of people consider BMX an extreme sport, yet with riders ranging from three years old to 60 years old and up, it's truly a sport for all ages and abilities, said Angie Denison, a track operator from El Paso, Texas.
"It's a very family orientated sport," said Jon Gurule, a volunteer at Sun City BMX and a BMX racer from El Paso, Texas. “There are several parents who attend the races with their children.”
“The parents who come to the track with their kids usually end up volunteering at the track or getting involved with the sport in some way,” said Denison.
Whether it’s maintaining the track or helping with racing events, there is always something that needs to be done and help is always appreciated, she said.
BMX offers a unique chance to enjoy the outdoors whether it’s looking for something to do alone or as a family. With more than 300 BMX locations in the U.S., there is bound to be a track close by, even after a permanent change of station move.
Since there are three BMX tracks around Fort Bliss and the surrounding area, soldiers and family members are sure to find one they will like. There is a track on the north side of town, the west side, and also a track located in Las Cruces.
For those new to the sport, track operators usually have a few bikes to lend to those wanting to try it out, said Denison. Track fees range from around $5 to $9.
