Challenge focused

FORT McCOY, Wis. – Cpl. Martin Norment, Brockport, New York native, assigned to the 479th Engineer Battalion, 366th Engineer Company will be competing against 39 competitors during the 2013 Army Reserve Best Warrior.

Being in a demanding environment like the best warrior competition is one of many things Norment likes about being in the Army Reserves.

“The Army has always provided me with good challenges,” said Norment, “So when I heard about the Best Warrior Competition, I knew it was something I wanted to do.”

Norment said though he enjoys pushing himself, juggling school and the reserve is difficult times.

“I may have a paper due the day after I have been in the field for three days,” said Norment. “I just have to work harder than most students and get it done. I enjoy the pressure cause it keeps me focused.”

Norment does not really have to stress out about balancing school and the Army, because he receives a lot of encouragement from his unit and others.

“My teachers are impressed that I am here. They said that they understand I have to miss school,” said Norment. “They had no problem letting me off for the previous competition.

Although Norment enjoys competing, he is not in the competition solely for himself. He said there is a lot of hard working guys back home who don’t get the chance to come to events like this for various reasons.

“I want to show that I have received great training and that my unit works hard,” said Norment. “I want to represent them as best I can.”
