RAPIC CITY, S.D. - Eight members of the South Dakota Army National Guard completed the Lincoln National Guard Marathon in Lincoln, Neb., May 5. Staff Sgt. Louis Durandt, Capt. Joshua Paull, Capt. Michael McDaniel, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Robert Steadman, Staff Sgt. Shane Hoenke, 2nd Lt. Rebecca Linder, Staff Sgt. Chasity Oswald, and Sgt. Kathleen Holscher all completed the Lincoln Marathon.

The Lincoln National Guard Marathon and Half-Marathon is run on a citywide course that starts and finishes on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Runners run past the Nebraska State Capitol, past Union College and past other historical and scenic sites in the city. Times from the Lincoln National Guard Marathon are also accepted in qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

The Lincoln was Hoenke’s first marathon.

“I was amazed at the caliber of people from the other states that run,” said Hoenke. “It was just amazing.”

Hoenke also said that watching other people excel in physical training (PT) was a great motivator for him to begin running.

“Watching other people get 300’s on their PT tests motivated me to do something, said Hoenke. “Then, I just started loving running – I never thought I’d hear myself say that.”

The Lincoln Marathon qualified 2nd Lt. Rebecca Linder for the All Guard Marathon Team, and also qualified Staff Sgt. Chasity Oswald as an alternate selection for the team.

Linder placed 39th of 609 women who competed in the marathon.
