SEATTLE — Coast Guard crews and members of the Washington Department of Ecology are responding to a fishing vessel run aground on the west side of Whidbey Island, Wash., early Tuesday.
Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound watchstanders received a report at approximately 4 a.m. stating that the 97-foot fishing vessel, Neahkahnie, had run aground in the vicinity of Greenbank, Wash. Watchstanders have dispatched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles, the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Swordfish and personnel from the Sector Puget Sound's Incident Management Division.
The vessel's master is coordinating with a commercial tug company. The crew of CGC Swordfish is enforcing a 500-yard safety zone around the vessel. The cause of the grounding is under investigation.
