2nd Marine Division honors heroes for accomplishments with dinner

Leadership from all over 2nd Marine Division attended the dinner to honor the 17 Marines and sailors that had been recognized by their units as going above and beyond both in combat and in the United States.

The Marines and sailors honored were attending the 6th Dinner for Heroes and were given a lot of recognition for their courage and selflessness.

“These guys were nominated for everything from war time heroics to saving lives here at Camp Lejeune, like a little kid that was drowning,” said Lukeman. “These guys have also excelled at what they do every day, and their commanders have noticed that and wanted to recognize them for their accomplishments.”

Paul Chapa, the founder of the Dinner for Heroes, started the event in January 2011 as a way to give back to Marines and sailors for their outstanding service. Other organizations such as Harris Teeter, Acosta and Nash Finch have joined with Chapa to donate food for the dinner.

“This is our way of saying thank you to our Marines. You all sacrifice so much to enable us to do what we do every day,” said Chapa. “It’s all about honoring those that have served, and it’s an absolute honor to be a part of this even if it’s a small part.”

Before the dinner started, Lukeman introduced himself and all the people present. He then introduced the Marines being honored for their outstanding achievements.

“Each and every one of you are all deserving of being nominated for this dinner, and I am very proud of all of you for being recognized by your command. This is our way of saying thank you,” said Lukeman.
