JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. - Who/What: Tech. Sgt. Daniel E. Huston was recently selected as one of Air Force District of Washington’s “Capital Airmen” for 2013. The airmen (service members and civil servants) who are showcased in this initiative have exemplified the Air Force core values of integrity first, service before self and excellence in all they do. Huston has an amazing story about his Air Force career, and is excited to share what it means to him to serve his country.

Background on hometown hero:
Huston, the son of Donald and Wendy Huston, who still reside in the area, graduated from Medical Lake High School in 1996. He lettered in basketball and soccer, playing on the Washington State All-State teams in both sports. Huston received a degree from the Community College of Spokane in 1999, where he captained the basketball team for two year. After graduating college, Huston coached basketball at Medical Lake High School for two years before enlisting in the Air Force in 2004.
Huston’s first duty assignment was Kadena Air Force Base, Japan. While there, he served in a variety of positions, including contracting specialist in the commodities flight and contract administrator for the multimillion dollar Simplified Acquisition of Base and Engineering Requirements (SABER) contract. He excelled in the Air Force, earning a key promotion ahead of schedule through the Senior Airman Below-the-Zone Program. Huston deployed twice to undisclosed locations in support of Operation Enduring and Iraqi Freedom from Japan.
When his tour in Japan ended, Huston relocated to Washington, D.C., working at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling for a short time. While there, he deployed again, this time to work as a member of Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay in Cuba as a contingency contracting officer. After returning from his deployment, he transferred to Joint Base Andrews to become a contracting team lead. He is currently attending University of Maryland University College and is three classes away from earning his bachelor's degree in business administration.
Throughout his career, Huston earned numerous unit, base and headquarter level awards. In addition to earning the title of Capital Airman, in April he was named the AFDW Noncommissioned Officer of the Quarter.
