600 race to finish Fort Bliss 5K Commander's Cup

FORT BLISS, Texas - More than 600 runners participated in the Fort Bliss 5k Post Commander’s Cup race beginning at Sgt. Joshua W. Soto Physical Fitness Center, Friday, at 6:30 a.m.

Although the 5K was closed to the public, generally commanders’ cup events tend to have larger turnouts.

Thirty-five awards were divided between five age divisions, to include male and female overall best times. The top three finishers from each male and female age group earned a medal, other awards included the commander’s cup. Points are given to the brigades with participants present – amounting in 10 points total per event, in addition to any points earned for awards.

“The trophies and medals give the soldiers pride and we hope more people get involved,” said Holly Imbriaco, intramural and varsity director. “Throughout the year [Fort Bliss Intramural Team] hosts commander’s cup events to give soldiers the opportunity to play sports and be competitive.”

William Beaumont Army Medical Center won the overall first place Commander’s Cup trophy, whereas 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade; 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division; and 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, held a three-way tie for second place – based on the number of runners to place for first, second and third.

Sgt. 1st Class Greg Wyrobek, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Armored Division, finished the run in 18 minutes, 22 seconds – receiving the best overall time.

“One thing that makes me a strong runner is being in the Army band,” said Wyrobek jokingly. “I always seem to have commitments to play. Finishing first is simply a byproduct of keeping my schedule.”

Imbriaco encourages the community to join the social networking sites to connect with persons interested in sports, teams looking for members, sports photos, race results, and upcoming sports events.
