Afghan National Army commandos destroy more than 3,100 kilos of homemade explosives

MAIWAND DISTRICT, Afghanistan - Afghan National Army commandos located a cache of weapons and homemade explosives while conducting a patrol near Kakoran village, Maiwand district, Feb. 18.

A villager's led the commandos to the cache. The cache contained approximately 3,100kg of homemade explosives, more than 20 IEDs, 60 meters of detonation cord, rifle scopes, one grenade and other bombmaking material.

A controlled detonation destroyed the bomb-making materials and resulted in no civilian casualties or property damage. The commandos' successful operation disrupts insurgent activity for the upcoming fighting season.

"The destruction of the cache is a big step toward disrupting insurgent activity," said the District Chief of Police Esmatullah.
