RALEIGH, N.C. — The slaps and strikes of wooden stocked M-1 Garands echoed through the auditorium of Ravenscroft School as the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon performed in Raleigh, N.C.
To show their appreciation for the military Ravenscroft School asked the Silent Drill Platoon to perform.
Jeffrey Clark, a parent of two Ravenscroft students and former Naval officer, worked with the school and the platoon to make the performance possible. He said he was responsible for the school’s Veterans Day celebration last year which got him thinking about what he could do for the students this year.
“I thought, wouldn’t it be amazing to get the Silent Drill Platoon down here next year,” said Clark.
Traditionally, the platoon performs for thousands of people, so this small auditorium gave a more intimate setting to the platoon’s demonstration of skill and discipline, traits Clark wanted the students to connect with.
“A lot of what (the Silent Drill Platoon) does embodies what Ravenscroft School is about,” said Clark. “I think the kids see a lot of themselves in what these Marines are about.”
These more intimate performances are not only more enjoyable for the spectators, but for the performers as well.
“With large performances, you’re racing through shaking hands,” said Lance Cpl. Carlton Bell, a Marine with the Silent Drill Platoon. “I like these small performances, because it’s more personal. You get to speak with people.”
When the platoon left the auditorium, they did so to a standing ovation.
“I thought it really showed how Americans can be so disciplined and that Marines are well trained people,” said Chase Johnson, a junior at the school. “I really enjoyed it and want to say a big thank you to everyone who serves.”
