PHOENIX - The U.S. Marine Corps is presenting two Phoenix area high school students with the highly selective $150,000 Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship, during halftime of the Mountain Pointe H.S. versus Desert Vista H.S. basketball game at Desert Vista H.S. Jan. 11.

The recipients, Jessica Zhu of Mountain Pointe and Tyler Angell of Desert Vista, were selected by Gen. James F. Amos, Commandant of the Marine Corps, based on academic excellence, physical fitness and moral character.

Zhu and Angell will each attend a four-year college of their choice with an NROTC program. During the summer of their junior year, they will attend Officer Candidates Course at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va.

Upon completion of their four-year degree, the recipients will receive their commissioning as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Marines to persue career opportunities that include pilots, ground combat officers, or a variety of support jobs.

"These students make an impact on their community and are now making the commitment to their country," says Maj. Michael Ford, presenter of the scholarships and commanding officer of Marine Corps Recruiting Station Phoenix.
