AUBURN, Wash. - The 133rd Washington Army National Guard Band with some supporting service members from the 56th Army Band performed its seventh annual free holiday concert for the community of Auburn, Wash., Dec. 2, at the Auburn Performing Arts Center.
The concert was entitled A Red, White and Blue Christmas and included a medley of patriotic and holiday themed music, as well as a reading of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” with musical accompaniment.
Sgt. 1st Class Mike Vandiver, the musical performance team leader for the Dixie Band and a Walla Walla, Wash. native, said the band always looks forward to the annual concert in Auburn.
“We put this on every year,” said Vandiver. “We love it, we love the support we get from it and it is great to come out and thank the community members for not only helping us and cheering us on, but also to welcome those soldiers back who are coming back from deployment and supporting them."
The show attracted audience members of all ages.
Nerica Keller, the wife of band member 1st Sgt. Kent E. Keller, watched the performance with their children and said the band’s performance of “Christmas in Sarajevo” was her favorite of the night.
“I thought Christmas in Sarajevo was really good,” said Keller. “I enjoyed the immense emotions behind the conductor for sure, and the concert was just enjoyable for me and my children.”
Col. Robin Blanchard, the commander of 96th Troop Command and a Lacey Wash. native, said she enjoyed the concert and thought it was a great way to give back to the community.
“The show was excellent, and it is always excellent,” said Blanchard. “It is so great to be able to give back to a community that gives us so much. All the communities in Washington are so good to our National Guard Soldiers and it is so nice to be able to give back to them in this kind of way. The band does such a fabulous job, there are smiles everywhere.”
Vandiver said the band already has the holiday concert scheduled for next year.
“After this gets over we start looking forward to next year and building a good show,” said Vandiver. “We come out and we entertain the audience and the community members and have a good time ourselves.”
