ARABIAN SEA – Guided-missile destroyer USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109) provided medical assistance to a mariner of a fishing vessel, Dec. 5.
Jason Dunham received a call from a Pakistani-flagged fishing dhow via bridge to bridge communications while on routine patrol in the Arabian Sea. The master of the dhow said a member of his 17-man crew was suffering from a kidney issue.
Once on scene the Jason Dunham sent an interpreter and a hospital corpsman to the dhow via a rigid-hull inflatable boat (RHIB) to assess the medical state of the mariner and provide care. After assessing the mariner the hospital corpsman determined that he had kidney stones and administered pain medication and recommended a course of treatment.
The patient and the master of the dhow expressed gratitude for the assistance and for coalition warships keeping the seas safe for commerce.
Jason Dunham is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility conducting maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts and support missions for Operation Enduring Freedom.
