TINIAN, Northern Mariana Islands - Students from the Tinian High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps watched as FA-18D Hornet aircraft made arrested landings at West Field here Dec. 7 during Exercise Forager Fury 2012.

The Marines with Marine Wing Support Squadron 171, Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force, invited the JROTC cadets to West Field to give them a glimpse into Marine aviation capabilities.

“We were invited by the Marines to come out here and observe arresting gear operations with their F-18s,” said 1st Sgt. Pete Salas (Ret.), a senior Army instructor for the JROTC. “It was a good opportunity for our cadets to see some real military exercises in person.”

Many of the cadets are still unsure if they wish to make the commitment of military service after high school, but still show great interest in the training during FF12.

“It was a really great experience for us to watch because a lot of us want to be in the military and it gives us a closer look at what we could be doing some day.” said Marquina Hofschneider, a cadet with the JROTC. “This made me want to be a pilot more, but I am still not sure.”

For the cadets that expressed an interest in joining the military, watching the jets in action may have helped confirm what military occupation specialty they would be interested in.

“Coming out here really benefitted (the cadets) because two of them expressed that they were interested in being Marine Corps fighter pilots,” said Salas. “After today, I think it is more like five or six (who want to be Marine Corps pilots). Seeing this in person really made them think, ‘maybe this is what I want to do.’”
The cadets also took the chance to speak with Marines here and ask them about their MOS, why they joined, and various other questions.

As the finial Hornet returned to the sky, the cadets took one final photo with the Marines, a keepsake from the day’s events to maintain the memories made.
