EDINBURGH, Ind. — The garrison commander of Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center, Ind., held a town hall meeting with the soldiers and civilian employees regarding the present and future of the installation, Nov. 28.

Col. Ivan Denton, of Fishers, Ind., addressed a large cross section of Camp Atterbury’s workforce in what was part state of the post and part question and answer session covering a wide variety of topics.

“The employees deserve to hear exactly where Atterbury stands in relation to our lines of effort and to ask any other questions they may have,” said Denton. “It is a means to keep open communication with Team Atterbury.”

Denton spent the first half of the meeting to discuss major efforts at Atterbury with continuing improvements underway for better training sites for reserve component forces, its continued existence as a mobilization force generation installation and civilian deployment operations. A significant portion was also dedicated to employment of the soldiers, civilians and contractors. With budget cuts and talk of fiscal cliffs prevalent in the news, many are concerned about continued funding for the installation, which offers a brisk trade in preparing soldiers and contractors for service overseas.

“The reserve component mobilization mission and contractor deployment line of efforts will continue at a DoD installation within the United States regardless of budget cuts," said Denton. “We are diligently working to make sure that these activities continue to occur here.”

Denton fielded questions from the soldiers under his command and civilians employed at the installation in the latter half of the meeting. Some of the questions were collected from web submissions and time was allocated for open microphone questions.

The development of the town hall meeting arose from a leadership survey conducted by the National Guard Bureau.

“The leadership team evaluated me on how I communicate with them,” said Denton. “They suggested a town hall meeting, and I thought it was a great idea.”

It isn’t often that a soldier has the opportunity to ask questions to an installation commander. So when the opportunity presented itself, several soldiers and civilian employees took it and attended the meeting.

“The amount of participation far exceeded what I expected,” said Denton. “We didn’t think there would be this many attending.”
Plans are to hold a town hall meeting three times a year or unless important information or changes warrant an additional one, said Denton.

“I felt this helps us better connect with soldiers and employees,” he said. “I think the better they understand what we’re trying to accomplish, the better off they are going to be postured. We want to provide the best working environment we possibly can.”

The town hall meeting further established a good working relationship to better the installation and better serve our customers.
