USS PELELIU - Cheers echoed in the gym of the USS Peleliu as Marines and sailors proudly cheered for their teammates during a ship-wide Campbell Cup Pull-Up Challenge, Nov. 24.
The challenge was the fourth competition in the Campbell Cup, a bi-monthly challenge that pits teams within the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Peleliu Amphibious Ready Group against each other. The goal was for teams of up to seven Marines or sailors to do as many pull-ups as possible in ten minutes. Unlike a physical fitness test, the participants were allowed to kip in order to maximize their number of times over the bar. However, team members were required to lock their elbows after each pull-up and their chins had to break the plane of the bar on each repetition.
“The pull-up competition was another successful Campbell Cup event, which built self-esteem, camaraderie and esprit de corps through the ranks of private to colonel,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Edward S. Debaun, religious program specialist, Command Element, 15th MEU.
“This event had the biggest turnout yet with nearly 100 Marines and sailors participating and many more watching the challenge,” added the 34-year-old native of Copperopolis, Calif.
Of 14 teams that participated, the winning team came from the 15th MEU’s aviation combat element, Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 364 (Rein.), with a total of 538 pull-ups.
“This really helped break up the daily routine,” said Cpl. Cesar Carrillo, technical controller, Command Element, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
“I had a lot of fun, and I think everyone else did too,” added the 24-year-old native of Bell Gardens, Calif., whose team came in 3rd place.
A team of sailors from the USS Peleliu came in second place, who were followed by Marines from the Command Element.
“This was a good event that really boosted morale and the competitive spirit,” said Cpl. Martin B. Krist, administration specialist, Command Element, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, and a member of the Campbell Cup committee.
Previous Campbell Cup events include a Modern Warfare XBOX tournament, Tour de Peleliu Biking challenge and a spades tournament. The next event scheduled in the Campbell Cup is a Pictionary competition.
The Campbell Cup involves events ranging from talent shows to video games to physical and mental challenges. At the end of each Sunday’s events, the teams are awarded points based on how they placed. The prestigious cup is named after Col. Scott D. Campbell, the 15th MEU commanding officer, and at the end of the deployment, he will present a trophy to the winning unit.
Currently, the Command Element team is in the lead with 37 points, followed by Kilo Company, Battalion Landing Team 3/5, 15th MEU, with 34 points and in third place is the Chief Petty Officer’s Mess with 20 points.
Debaun stated he couldn’t do this without the help of his Campbell Cup committee. The Campbell Cup committee is made up of 16 Marines and sailors throughout the 15th MEU.
The 15th MEU is deployed as part of the Peleliu Amphibious Ready Group as a U.S. Central Command theater reserve force, providing support for maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
