OLYMPIA, Wash. – Members and volunteers from Olympia, Wash. and the Association of the United States Army Olympia-Tumwater sub-chapter gathered at the Capital Collision Center to put together more than 340 care packages, Nov. 16, for deployed and deploying soldiers of the 593rd Sustainment Brigade.

The 593rd SB and the city Olympia are brought together through the Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s Community Connector Program, which links local communities with specific units on JBLM. The program’s goal is to encourage community support and partnership with soldiers and families living within the surrounding areas.

Currently the brigade has more than 160 soldiers deployed and another large group is scheduled to deploy in the upcoming months. Soldiers are deployed in six different countries including: Cuba, Honduras, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan and Qatar. Every one of these soldiers should be receiving a care package these holidays.

More than 160 care packages will be shipped to soldiers who are already deployed. Soldiers who are still in country will receive their care packages here on JBLM before leaving.

“These care packages are a small token of our appreciation and we hope this brings a little bit of holiday cheer for those soldiers who are so far away from home,” said Roger Hansen, president, AUSA Olympia-Tumwater sub-chapter. “The community outside of JBLM is thinking of them.”

The care packages will include hard candy, playing cards, a toothbrush, chocolate and snacks. Donations from various community businesses made it possible for soldiers to receive these care packages.

“We want the soldiers to know that we really care about them and we are back here thinking of them,” said Kyla Cavanagh, sales manager, Red Lion Hotel. The hotel made a donation toward the purchase of the items for the care packages.

The Olympia Rotary Club played a big part in making these care packages possible for the soldiers, said Bob Jones, military liaison, Olympia. The club donated $500 toward the purchase of snacks.

“I know that the soldiers are working very hard and the least we can do is recognize their service by thanking them and by showing our appreciation with a care package, these soldiers deserve everything we can possibly do for them,” said Jones.
