NEW YORK - The 42nd Infantry Division of the New York Army National Guardsman, along with the American Red Cross provides food and hygiene aid to the community of Far Rockaway in response to Hurricane Sandy.

“This area was particularly hard hit,” said Mike Powers, director of Disaster Services for Charleston and Columbia regions. “We’ve got a number of high rise apartments where people have been stuck without electricity and without power or water for a long time. We’ve been making a concerted effort, working with other members of the volunteer and government agencies to try and reach out and help these people.”

During the health and wellness inspections, reservists went door-to-door to ensure residents had electricity, heat, food, water and necessary medication. Residents with critical medical needs were annotated and registered with the New York City Department of Health.

“Yesterday we did health and wellness inspections,” said Lt. Colonel Patrick Macklin, 42ID planning officer. “Most of the high rise buildings have been checked already, but there were multifamily dwellings here that have four or five families living in them that we hadn’t checked on until yesterday.”

“We had a lady that had run out of all her medication,” said Sgt. Geovanny Alfaro, a native of Queens. “We were able to get some care for her.”

“Today we’re going out to the sites that we identified yesterday and we’re going to drop off three comfort kits per family and 12 Heater Meals per family,” said Macklin.

Macklin said his unit had 77 residential units left to visit. Any units that were missed on Monday would be visited on Tuesday.

“I’d rather be doing this – directly helping out – than watching it on TV,” said Alfaro. “I take a lot of pride in actually being out here.”
